Megu Itoh, Ph.D.

As a researcher, I study how people build connections in unlikely contexts. I examine relations of resistance fostered under colonial occupation, which are often overlooked in favor of more legible categories such as policy change, revolution, and social movements. In sum, my work recovers (and highlights) hidden solidarities. Such efforts take me through the historical to the digital, from institutional archives to social media posts. My scholarship has appeared in journals like The Quarterly Journal of Speech, Critical Studies in Media Communication, and Journal of the History of Rhetoric.

^{私は多様な文脈の中で築かれる繋がりを研究しています。社会運動や政策などの研究で見落とされがちな人間関係に焦点を当て、周縁化された声を引き上げようとしています。アーカイブを用いた歴史的研究方法からSNS投稿を用いたデジタルな研究方法まで幅広く活用し、日本の歴史・社会問題・メディアコンテンツを分析しています。学術誌に掲載されている私の研究は次のようなテーマを取り扱っています： (1) 国境を越えて変わる「進撃の巨人」のメッセージ性; (2) 資本主義社会のもとで市場競争と相手を想う気持ちの葛藤を物語る「鬼滅の刃：無限列車」; (3) 1960年代に米国の青年国際党と日本の安保闘争が共にデモで使った蛇行進（スネーク・ダンス）。}

As a teacher, I value co-creation of knowledge with students. I seek to empower students by encouraging the use of critical thinking to develop their own ideas. My classrooms invite students to engage in discussion, apply theory to real world case studies, and facilitate group projects. Finally, I do this to support the cultivation of ethical sensibilities—something I believe is crucial within an increasingly global and digital world.
